The First Week of School

August 28, 2008 2:46 pm

This week was Graham’s first day of school. Not real school, mind you, but a two-day program where he goes from 9-12. It’s just enough time to give me back my sanity without feeling the guilt of putting a 20 month old in school. Plus I’ll get to spend some one-on-one time with Elliot where I don’t have to throw her down every two minutes to save her big brother from sudden danger.

On Monday, we went to “Meet the Teacher” and I have to admit we were both very nervous afterward. There were 10 kids plus their parents, nannies, siblings and grandparents in the tiny classroom and it was chaos. We didn’t really know what to expect since Graham has never been to a formalized daycare or preschool of any sort. Graham’s teacher, Ms Laurie, is very nice but looked disheveled as she tried to go over the rules and expectations with a packed room of busy toddlers and their families. Graham was instantly himself and ran from toy to toy, picking them up and throwing them down for the next toy he saw. He tried to rip all of the posters off of the walls and it felt like an insurmountable task keeping him in line while we tried to pay attention to the teacher. One observation we both made is that the girls in the class are wayyyyyyyy more subdued than Graham ever was. They sat in their chairs and played with Play-Doh nicely without throwing or eating anything. Is there really that much of a difference between girls and boys or do we just have the Tasmanian Devil on our hands? I look forward to finding out when Elliot gets old enough to play with her brother.

On the first “official” day, we got everyone dressed, packed and loaded up without a hitch. Well, besides the pickiest little bastard ever that refused to eat any breakfast, but that’s a whole other post. Jamie and I make a great tag team, we each tackle one kid and get everything done quickly and efficiently.  There was way less drama surrounding the first day than I was expecting. I have been dreading this day all summer, knowing that it was coming and not sure how I’d feel when it finally got here.  We dropped off Graham, gave him a quick kiss goodbye and he was off. He practically kicked us out the door when he saw all of the unprotected toys he could destroy.

Jamie, Elliot and I headed off to the “Boo Hoo Coffee” with the other parents. One mom in the class was already crying when she was saying goodbye to her son so I had to look away so I didn’t get choked up. We hung out for awhile and got to know some of the other parents in his class then headed home. WITH FORTY FUCKING MINUTES LEFT UNTIL WE HAD TO GO BACK AND GET HIM.  I went back and picked him up and man, did his teacher look shell-shocked. When I got there, they informed me that Graham had tried several times to escape. Duh, he’s 1 1/2 years old, it’s what they do. They had also been to the playground twice in the three hours he was there so I think she was a little thrown off and had to resort to the playground to contain the kids.  I feel bad for his teacher, I know she’s taught early childhood education before but I don’t think she’s ever had 1-2 year olds. And 10 of them (with an assistant). I’m sure after a couple of weeks, she’ll get the hang of it and the kids will get used to their routines but hoooo boyyyyyyy, did that woman look tired. Jamie just called after dropping off Graham for his second day. He let me know that when they walked in, Graham BEE LINED FOR THE HUGE PAIR OF SCISSORS SITTING ON THE COUNTER AND STARTED WAVING THEM AROUND. Jesus. Hopefully he teaches them a lesson in childproofing before he gets hurt. We’re going to start renting him out to new parents to see what they need to childproof.

Here’s my kid looking oh-so-cute with his backpack that Grandma got him:

And here’s Elliot complaining about having to spend one-on-one time with Mommy and Daddy.

Here are Elliot and I at the Boo Hoo Coffee. Elliot’s hands are yummy. Nom nom nom.
