Funky Foto Flashback: O Canada

August 6, 2009 9:23 am

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve participated in Bex’s Funky Foto Flashback but I’m back.

My grandmother grew up on a small farm in upstate NY, right on the Canadian border. We took several trips upstate to her childhood home and the border post was always my favorite attraction. I thought it was so cool that I could stand with one foot in each country. Somehow, I expected the border to be more official and have guards with guns or something but it was just a dinky little post in the middle of a cow field.

That’s my brother and me, circa 1989 standing at the border in all of our preteen dorkiness. That IS a bow in my hair, you saw it right. I was, and still am, the epitome of cool.

Coulda been worse. Coulda been a banana clip.

Or, like me, it coulda been a silk vest in primary colors.

and a nice big bow at that. Consider yourself lucky. In 1989 I was out nightclubing wearing outifts my daughter does not even want passed down to her.

Ahahaha I love the bow. LOVE. IT. When I was little I would beg for bows to wear in my hair. The bigger the better.

Rock the kasbah, hot stuff. I wish I had a bow. Totally Madonna style.

hahahaha! are those acid wash jeans? having never been to the border myself, i expected something more official looking – like maybe a statue with a bronze plaque or something. or at least a really fancy rest stop. btw: the fanciest rest stop i have ever seen was in your great state!

Can we please talk about those stunning acid-washed shorts? 😉 I had the same ones!
PS- Canadians still call it taking a trip “upstate” even though you’re heading south? Interesting! I thought only us metro New Yorkers did that.

When I was 10, I thought I was so cool to have my feet on 4 states, on the corners of Texarcane, only to find out this last spring that they think they’ve got the spot wrong and the real borders are actually a couple miles away.
    Oops!

At official border crossings there’s lots of gun action, but for the rest of our gigantic border it’s mostly just grass and trees. And large towers with lots of surveilance equipment on it. Still, for all the money you guys spend on taxes to Homeland Security, you could drive France across the border without anybody stopping you.

PS. Robin-we don’t say ‘upstate’ because we have provinces.

    PPS. HAWT bow.

it must depend where you are sneaking your France across? My end is all about the extra cigs you are hiding under your car seats.

I love the way you tucked your t-shirt into acid washed jeans. It’s very Jersey of you.

My four year old totally covets your bow. She wanted to buy a bow bigger than her head at the hair salon the other day. I said no!

    Very cool F3!

OMG, so many things make this an awesome flashback: the hair bow, the big t-shirt tucked in, the acid-washed jeans. Yes, a thousand times yes!

You have a bow *hee* *hee* you were such a dork.

(What? No. I didn’t wear white paints that had these paint splatters all over them … intentionally…with red suspenders. Uh-uh. Not me. And I did not get my naturally wavy hair permed, causing me to look like some kind of deranged poodle. Nope. Not me.)

Hahaha. I am jealous of your preteen coolness. The bangs, the bow, the acid wash. It’s too much cool for one kid, you wore it well. 😉
