Club Half As Small As You: Week 35

June 22, 2009 12:01 am

Welcome to week 35 of Club HASAY! Not sure what HASAY is? Read all about it here.

As your HASAY leader, I have a confession to make. Over the course of the last several weeks, my friend Aimee (hi Aimee!) and I have been secretly meeting a couple of nights a week for dessert. We sneak out late at night after the kids are in bed and leave our husbands home to hold down the forts. We started out small with McDonalds sundaes and moved on to full fledged desserts from chain restaurants like Fridays or Chillis. We’ve formed our own secret dessert society. I didn’t ask any of you guys to join us because hey, HASAY leader here and it would look bad for my reputation (and my ass).

Things have been tough here in the HAGAY household. Graham’s ears are still reaking havok on our lives and we just scheduled surgery to have his ear tubes replaced. What’s that you say? Didn’t he just get those tubes back in December? Why yes, he did. One of them is clogged and he’s still having infections so they’re going to replace the tubes. I’m taking him for a second opinion today but it looks like his surgery will be on July 2nd. Between both kids, our days have been spent at the pediatrician, ENT, allergist and speech therapist. That’s not to mention the swim lessons, gymboree classes and playdates we have scheduled.

Poor Graham has been miserable for awhile now and the ear pain trickled over to his temperament so the rest of us are miserable too. On top of that, Elliot’s separation anxiety recently went into overdrive. Between her constant need to be near me, on me, ALL DAY LONG and Graham’s ear infection rage/neediness, things have been hard around here. I’ve enjoyed getting to hang out with my friend once or twice a week and blow off a little steam. Plus, I’m an emotional eater so when I get stressed out, chocolate relaxes me. Isn’t it that way for everyone?

After realizing that dessert club probably wasn’t the best idea, Aimee and I decided to mix it up a bit. We both have YMCA memberships so we moved our evening soirees to the gym. Thursday was our first attempt and I actually ellipticalled for an hour without dying! It helps that the gym equipment has TVs on each machine so you can plug your headphones in and watch what you want. I was also entertained by texting Aimee back and forth to relay messages of fellow gym member’s farts catching me off guard when my mouth was open. I only made that mistake twice.

So there you have it, notice of my dessert club’s existence and disbandment all in one post. I’ll be at the gym from now on, sweating with the stinkers. Does anybody care to join me?

Wow. It’s gym week!! Jen-SK joined, and so did I!! Mine doesn’t have TVs at every machine, but it does have 70 year old men wearing gold chains and wife-beaters. Wait. That’s not even close to comparable… but it’s all I’ve got. 🙂

Dee, Jen, and you all joined a gym. I’m starting to feel left out. Nah, not really. I think I’ll wallow around watching you guys. Sorry, to hear the Graham’s ears are still giving him fits. Hope the second surgery works better than the first.

You go! Desserting and then deserting the dessert! Read it again. It does make sense. I think. I was the same way with the spinning bike, all excited about making through the hour and then thinking, I hafta do that AGAIN?!

WOW. It’s sounds like you’ve had a hellish time of it. I commend you for just going out for dessert and not drinks, so I guess it could be worse… you could have ended up in rehab instead of the gym.
Good luck with the rest of the week!

Oh, sure, confess the shameful secret after you’ve given it up and made healthy changes. Darn it! How can we chastise you when you’ve self corrected?

Seriously, good for you making the change. 🙂

OMG, the tubes have to be replaced?! I didn’t know that was even a possibility?! We are still in limbo with our toddler’s ears.. he has fluid there continually but they are currently (a few weeks now, first time clear since Halloween) clear. We think. We hope! Keep us posted. I’m definitely giving them YOU as an example when they ask me AGAIN if we want to do tubes.

I can’t believe the fart story either. Yik.

Umm, no thanks. I’m on HASAY holiday remember? Which is a very good thing because I found Pepperidge Farm Double Chocolate Brownie Cookies today at the store. First they import fudge covered oreos to Germany and now Pepperidge Farm? A girl only has so much willpower you know.

Whoa, sorry to hear that things are going sideways in your house. Poor Graham! I say, do what you gotta do to get through it, whether it’s huge desserts or snarky texting. Both sound good.

It’s nice to know you only made that mistake twice. How’s that saying go, “Fart near me once, shame on you. Fart near me twice, shame on me?”

Wow – trading in dessert club for the gym? That is pretty impressive, fearless leader.

Sorry to hear that Graham’s ears are giving him trouble again. I had ear issues as a little kid and I remember that being *very* painful. Poor little guy (and mom).

Your poor kid and you and the hubby. When a family member is ill, everyone suffers. I this time it works permanently.

Good for you for moving to the gym. I feel so good after a workout it’s amazing. It’s what keeps me going back

I’m reading back through all your HASAY posts to give myself a little motivation. I signed up to do the RAGNAR race in Utah next summer and I’m scared to death. I just began my training and I am sooooooooooo out of shape. Ugh!
