<div id="content"> <div id="contentmiddle"> <div class="contenttitle"> <h1><a href="http://halfasgoodasyou.com/?p=5003" rel="bookmark">Spin Cycle: Love Hurts</a></h1> <p>June 3, 2009 12:01 am </p> </div> <p>Not long after Jamie and I started dating, I knew he was “the one”. It sounds so effing cliche to see it in writing but it’s true. We were instantly comfortable with each other and it was just right. I had found my best friend and knew that he was the guy I wanted to build a life with. The only thing left to conquer was to speak those three little words. </p> <p>The last time I’d uttered the words “I love you”, my heart was repeatedly broken. I’d since made a mental note to guard those words heavily and to only break them out again when I really meant them. That time had arrived so I mapped out my plan and waited for the right moment to execute.</p> <p>Before kids, Jamie and I would occasionally spend a Saturday night tossing back a few beers and enjoying each other’s company. We’d even have an occasional cigarette to go along with the beer. One night, we were sitting on the patio watching a full moon. I’d had just enough liquid courage to say what I needed to say. I was sitting in a plastic lawn chair and Jamie was standing over me, gazing lovingly into my eyes. He opened his mouth and said “I love you”. At that exact moment, he leaned in to kiss me and the lawn chair gave way. The fucking thing snapped in half and I fell to the ground. Jamie came down with me and his cigarette burned my arm on the way down. </p> <p>Jamie managed to beat me to the punch and injured me in the process. My first reaction was to yell “you burned me, you asshole!” and then “Oh, and I love you too!” I laughed until I cried and we sat there on the ground for awhile looking up at the moon and kissing. It’s true what they say, love hurts. In my case, the pain was all worth it. </p> <p>Looking for love in all the wrong places?
