Funky Foto Flashback: One Man’s Trash, Another Man’s Treasure

Have you heard about the Funky Foto Flashback hosted by Bex over at Adventures of the Grigg Boys? It’s pretty darn cool.

Growing up in Clearwater, my brothers and I spent countless hours at the beach digging for lost treasures. This picture looks like it was taken at Honeymoon Island or the Dunedin Causeway but we dug wherever we went. I was always so envious of the guys with metal detectors and really wanted one of my own.

We once dug up a plastic baggy with a syringe on it, I was probably only four or five at the time. My brother and I were SO excited to show my mom the cool needle we found but she lost her shit and started crying when her kids brought her someone’s heroin stash. Good times. Also, that kickass car is not ours, we had a brown Chevy van (which was much cooler).

I can imagine how excited you were. You’d hit the jackpot of cool stuff. Yeah, I think I would have completely freaked the heck out if my kids brought me that.

That car does rock.

I remember how excited I was when I found this teeny, tiny glass vile on the beach. I had all sorts of plans for the adventures we’d have together. My mom also flipped her sh*t and my new friend found its way to the nearest trashcan. Such a sad day…

Yike, the beaches we went to were a bit tamer we’d just find beer bottles or broken glass from beer bottles.

We used to go camping at the beach every summer growing up – it was so much fun digging for ‘treasure’ in the sand, but we never found anything cool like you did! Of course if we had, my parents would have totally freaked out, too…

I saw your comment at Suburban Matron and came to check out your blog. Anyone who calls those who diss Al Gore “stupidheads” is someone I want to know better.

You have some funny stories here! And Graham and Elliot are very cute. VERY cute. So here are my questions for today: is the baby on the drums Elliot or someone else? And do you think she’ll get curls like Graham? I await your reply.

I love taking the kids to the beach, but sadly, the water here is too cold for swimming. No heroin needles so far, but we’ll keep an eye out. Scary!

The photo is adorable! I would have loved finding a needle on the beach as a kid, but as a mom, would totally lose my shit (and try to work out some way to sterilize the kids.

I would have lost my shit too. Not that I say shit, but I still would have lost it. Holy crap! Poor kids…but at least your mom didn’t use it later. That could have been bad. Did I just write that? Oh it’s been a looong week. Sorry.

I spent more than my fair share of time trying to figure out how to get a metal detector when I was a kid.

Never got one.

Nothing quite like finding used needles or used condoms at the beach. Haven’t these people ever heard of Pack Your Trash?

Oooohhhhh….I always wanted a metal detector, too. I would dream of all the cool things I’d do with it (besides getting filthy rich from all the money I found with it).
