We Bearly Made It

December 18, 2008 7:00 am

Well, Graham made it through his surgery and we got home around 5:30 last night. I only had a breakdown once, when the anesthesiologist came by to do his thing. I had tears rolling down my face as I answered his questions and the poor dude looked uncomfortable. After we got home, we spent the remainder of the night injecting as many popsicles and liquids into him as we could. When we finally got him to sleep at 8:30, I followed suit shortly after. A 9PM bedtime is lame, I know, but I was up at 4AM pumping food into the kid so he didn’t starve to death before his surgery. Oh, and entertaining a hungry/overtired two year old for three + hours in a hospital waiting room? Not pleasant.

Today’s guest poster is Mrs Bear from Outnumbered Two To One. “The Bear”, as Jamie and I affectionately call her, is the FIRST PERSON WHO EVER TAGGED ME OR GAVE ME AN AWARD. I was giddy. If you want me to like you, all you have to do is give me something.

I’ve decided to change The Bear’s name to “The Rock” because throughout all of our ear infection madness, she has been my council on all things ear infections. It started several months ago when Graham was pulling an all-nighter. His all-nighters don’t include NoDoze and cramming for exams, they involve blood-curdling screams and outright refusal to sleep. It was during one of these screamfests that I first let loose on The Bear. We had an email thread going back and forth and I was nearing a sleep-deprivation breakdown. That night, around 2AM, I sent The Bear the most cryptic, profanity laced, sleep deprived, teetering on the edge of breakdown email to which she explained to me that she had been in the same situation a year earlier with her youngest kid and talked me off of the ledge. She’s been my friend throughout this madness and I’m glad to have her. Thanks, Mrs Bear (aka The Bear or The Rock), I’m glad to know ya.

Just Give Me Something To Blog About

Okay, I admit it, after a week of contemplating bloggy topics for my much anticipated guest post, (I know you were all aquiver, don’t lie) I find myself at a complete and utter loss for ideas. I suppose stress has a lot to do with it – the looming holiday, the whole Santa Claus deception, the economy, my astrological chart being in weird flux, the pizza I had for dinner (forgive me HASAY for I have sinned).

Or perhaps I’ve just been over-thinking this entire guest post thing. Do I go the comedic route or opt instead for refreshingly brutal honesty? Should I generate some controversy or attempt to dazzle Casey’s readers with my razor sharp wit? Then again what if all my jokes fall flat? What if my truth comes off as pretentious? What if I offend all of her readers? What if my wit is more dim than dazzle?

Oh the humanity!

The solution to my guest post conundrum…

This guy. The little one, not the half man next to him.

Last year this time we were knee deep in antibiotic prescriptions for ear infections that wouldn’t go away. That smiling cool cat in the photo, was a screeching, angry one year old who didn’t want to eat or sleep or muster a little pity for his struggling mom and just get better. We did the double ear tube surgery thingie this April, after yet another bout that caused the gross ear pus to spread in to his tear ducts. I honestly didn’t even know that was possible. My baby is much better now, and a complete pain in the ass for a myriad of other reasons. But at least he’s not medicated, unless you count that dose of Benadryl I give him when…I’m kidding, please don’t call Child Services, he’s a well adjusted toddler I swear.

Another reason I posted his photo is because I figured his overwhelming cuteness factor would cause you all to overlook the glaring lack of substance in this post, possibly distracting you long enough for me to make my getaway. Thanks photo accomplice. I’m outta here… By the way, it looks like you spilled a little orange juice on your pants.

Feel better Graham and fam.

His overwhelming cuteness would have covered any lacks if there had been.

Thank you for being such a good and loyal friend and support to Casey and Jamie.

Second! No worries, Mrs. Bear! The overwhelming cuteness wouldn’t let me look at the content for too long. I spent 10 minutes on this site alone just staring at adorable toddler face!

It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Bear!! When my son was a newborn he got an ear infection which caused his ears to drain through his tear ducts, too. I took him to the doc for what I thought was an eye infection. I had never heard of your ear goop coming out of your eyes before!! Ugh. A nightmare that I understand all too well!

    Your son is adorable!!

Boy, I feel like a bad friend. I’ve been so caught up with me, myself, and I, that I haven’t stopped by to learn about Graham’s surgery until right now! Sorry!

I hope by now he’s over the worst of it. I can remember many sleepless nights when my four were little. And that’s a minor miracle because that was a long, long time ago! Actually, I can remember MORE sleepless nights when they were older. Nothing like a 16 year old who knows everything, with a driver’s license, and a whole world of trouble out there. But I’m drifting into the me, myself and I again. Sorry again.

Get rested up. I hope you can enjoy your holiday season after this.

Oh, and I enjoyed your guest bloggers very much! How very nice!!

    Casey, I’m glad Graham’s surgery went well…

MrsB, we’re in the middle of the double ear infection that won’t go away. Bleh. I almost hope they’ll decide to do the surgery so we can get to where you are. You know, “not” using Benadryl to make him sleep…

And I’m really glad Graham came through the surgery fine, Casey, here’s hoping he’s back to his exuberant self again very soon! I feel for you, both my sister’s boys had to have that surgery when they were young…it’s not fun watching such little ones ‘suffer’ like that! You both are in our thoughts and prayers! I’ll be checking back often, I’m enjoying this blog! πŸ˜‰
