Happy Turkey Day

November 27, 2008 7:00 am

I found this postcard recently while sifting through some old papers. My Grandma used to send me things like this for the holidays and also just to say hello. I grew up in FL but spent every summer with Gram in NY, I was her little helper. When I went away to college, Gram sent me a blue toolkit, complete with a blue hammer and tape measure. We still use it around the house today, thirteen years later. After she passed away, we found a stack of letters that I had sent her over the years. Gram kept every single correspondence and now I have them here with me.

My Grandma passed away on November 3rd, 1999. I spend a lot of time missing her and wishing my kids could have gotten to know her. I still have all of her her handwritten recipes that we used to bake together. We keep her pictures around so that they will grow up knowing who Gram was and how special she was. Today when I’m at my parent’s house stuffing my face with turkey, I’ll be thinking about my Gram. We all will be.

Have a happy and safe holiday everybody. For you Canadians, happy Thursday.

She sounds like such a lovely lady, and I can see her touch in the kindnesses you share with all of us. Thank you for sharing that sweet postcard! That was lovely. Your love for your gram will surely be passed on to your kids. My daughter lost her Gram (my mom) almost two years ago but she cherishes the times she had with her.

We miss her quite a bit during the holiday season but we carry on her traditions also.

Much love to you and yours and may this day herald a holiday season of joy, love and peace.

Aw, very sweet. I love Gram. Those hand written notes and recipes mean a lot to you, I’m sure. I’ve been thinking I need to convert my Grandmother’s old recipes into a cookbook for my other family members, and haven’t gotten around to it yet. But don’t you think it would be an awesome Christmas present? One of these years….

Aw, I lost my Gramma a few years ago too, and I still have a stack of letters and cards for her. It makes me sad sometimes that future generations won’t have that tangible connection to their ancestors. Somehow an inbox full of saved emails isn’t quite the same.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving! You made me cry with this one. I lost my grandmother 14 years ago. I wish I had letters or something more tangible than my memories to remember her by. I’d just about kill for her pierogi recipe (I can do the filling, but the dough eludes me). Beautiful post. Thank you for inspiring me to think of her. Your grandma sounds like quite the wonderful lady. I love the toolkit gift! What a great idea.

What a sweet thing to find to remember your Gram. Most of my family is gone and I love finding things to share with my children to share their heritage. It is so special and important for them to know where they came from!

We are home now, and I am also close to exploding! Tomorrow we are decorating…UGH!!

    Happy happy Thanksgiving!!!

I was trying to think of something smart to say, but nothing is coming. I miss my Grandma too. I don’t have any cards or recipes but I do have a lot of funny stories because Grandma was quirky, lol! I wish she was here.
What a sweet tribute you made to yours. 🙂
