Back In The Saddle Again

Happy election day everyone! No politics here today, I’ll be home biting my nails and screaming at the TV all night. Oh, and eating pizza, election pizza.
——————————————————————————————–
This time last week I posted a woe is me post about Gymboree going bankrupt and me having no place to take my kids to escape the stir craziness that is our house. I felt so lame even publishing that post because c’mon, it’s Gymboree, but you guys responded with such a sympathetic ear and made me feel warm and fuzzy to have friends like you. Thanks!

Gymboree actually closed on October 23rd so it’s only been about a week and a half. During that time, I walked around in a state of depression. Seriously. I met up at the mall with another Gymboree friend and she had trouble stifling her laughter while I chased Graham back into the play area at least thirty times. I was glad to have a witness that the kid DOES NOT STOP but still, I yearned for the enclosed escape-free environment that is Gymboree. We went to the park and after maybe two minutes of swinging, Graham was off to try to rummage through the beer bottles hanging out of the overflowing trash can. My son has no interest in playing with things he’s allowed to play with and instead loves to challenge us and run away in his solo game of chase. We don’t so much love playing that game, especially in public.

A few of the Gymboree moms formed an alliance. It was like we were the last people alive on a deserted island and we all understood each other’s pain. We met up at Planet Bounce on Friday and although it was great, Graham still managed to get into things he shouldn’t (the bathroom, mop sink, behind the equipment, etc). Instead of bouncing his happy curls away, he spent the entire two hours running into the lobby and asking the poor teenage kid working there to turn the fan on. Then off. Then on. We have several fans at home that I could turn off and on so I felt like he wasn’t making the best use of his time there. Still, he had fun and the teenage kid manning the place was nice enough to oblige him.

On Saturday, I got an email from one of the other Gymboree moms stating that they were reopening on Monday! I immediately ran to tell Jamie and then responded to the email stating that I didn’t believe her. On Monday morning, I set out for my HASAY walk with Graham and then decided to see for myself if Gymboree was really open. We hiked the entire way there, which I mapped out is two miles in each direction. I picked up the pace and pushed my way through the grass (there are no sidewalks along half of the roads leading there). We braved oncoming traffic and made it through alive. About thirty minutes later, we pulled up to the door. Some nice corporate lady (they took over and the place is run by corporate bots) opened the door with a smile and my sweaty ass barged right in. “Welcome back, can we help you?” I told her I wasn’t there for a class or to play but I simply made the trek there just to see if they were really open. Were they? YES, THEY WERE. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I thanked them and breathed a sigh of relief. That thirty minute trek home was great, I don’t really remember the walking part so much as the floating on air. We’re back, and badder than ever.

Gymboree is now open – Awesome!

JR was all in favor of caged spaces for the boys because the youngest tended to escape also. Me, I was more of a free spirit. I let them have the run of our 5 acre lot and as long as they didn’t come back spurting blood all was good.

P.S. Border Collies make great babysitters.

That’s great–I totally understand! When my kids were little we lived in a more rural area so there was no Gymboree, but we had alternatives and I know I would’ve gone completely ballistic if there was nothing to escape to sometimes!

Oh YAY! That’s a load off for you!! I know it really must be important to push a stroller over grass for 4 miles, lol. You’ve totally earned your election pizza, pepperoni and all.

My son never stops either. It’s rough. Go outside and play is my usual respite since there are about eight other kids in the neighborhood.
