Things That Go Bump In The Night

September 4, 2008 9:46 pm

Last night Graham woke up at 2AM hysterically screaming. I went in to check on him and he was glowing. Since I had just been jolted out of a deep sleep, it took a minute to figure out exactly why my poor baby was lit up like the Fourth of July. I actually did a double take when I saw him.

Graham was wearing one of the new pairs of PJ’s that I had recently bought him. They had cute dinosaurs on them and were glow in the dark. Extremely glow in the dark, like look at the sun and burn your eyes glowing. Graham must have woken up to see dinosaurs covering his entire body and freaked the f out. I rocked and calmed him but he was stiff and still seemed scared of the dinosaurs. I changed him to another pair of PJ’s and held him for awhile until he finally calmed down. It took at least an hour.

I remember the glow in the dark of my childhood. It sucked, you could hold something on a hot light bulb for an hour and it would only hold a “charge” for maybe twenty minutes. What the hell is in these new pajamas that had them still glowing so brightly seven hours after my kid went to bed? Is it possible that scientists can harness this glow in the dark energy to light stadiums?

In retrospect, it probably wasn’t a great idea to put a twenty month old in glow in the dark PJ’s. They’re size 5T (Graham is a man child), so they’re probably meant for someone much older than him but they were so cute. After turning the PJ’s inside out to prevent any further freak outs, I buried them in the bottom of his hamper until morning. They have now been permanently removed from the rotation and we’re going glow in the dark free for the foreseeable future. Has anyone else had any experiences with glow in the dark permanently scarring their children?

Oh, yeah, the craze of glow in the dark moon and stars stickers used to freak my sister out. One day, unbeknowest to her, I had my older cousin put them on the fan blades. That night after watching ET, I turned out the light, turned on the fan, and tried to convince her that ET was going to get her. It took her a while to get over that. Thanks for making me remember that. Good times, good times..

I had trillions of glow in the dark stars on my ceiling but I was like 10… I can just see Graham’s curls glowing the dark…. too funny but I hope he is sleeping fine now because I know when the little man doesn’t sleep; no one sleeps!
