Foot Meet Mouth

September 3, 2008 2:15 pm

Yesterday afternoon, Graham and I went to Gymboree to play. We usually go to music class on Wednesdays so his teacher was asking him if she’d see him at class this week. No, I told her, I would be attending the parents breakfast at school and Graham would be home with his dad and sister. I went on to bitch about how Graham is only going for six hours a week and that the breakfast was to try to rope me into volunteering. I only get six hours a week to spend one on one time with Elliot and now they wanted me to give some of that time up to volunteer at the school, what’s up with that. Blah blah blah, complain complain complain. I noticed a lady standing nearby listening in. “What school does your son go to?” she asked? I told her. “Oh, that’s where my kids go. I’m the treasurer and volunteer coordinator and I’m co-chairing the breakfast tomorrow.” “So nice to meet you.” I told her. Also some crap about how much I was looking forward to the breakfast and the chance to volunteer. Mmmmmmmmmm, feet taste yummy.

Today at the breakfast, I marched right over to the volunteer sign up form and put my name down for the book fair. I told the lady that I have an infant at home but she welcomed me to sign up for SEVERAL days and bring the baby with me. Uh, you’re f’ing crazy lady. I smiled and told her I’d try it for one day and see how things went. During the speaking part of the breakfast, the volunteer coordinator stood up and begged for moms to come forward and volunteer as homeroom moms. She listed the classes that still need them (Graham’s). I stared at my feet, checked my phone and did everything in my power NOT TO MAKE EYE CONTACT. I felt a sense of unity with the other mothers doing the same. Who knew we’d still be trying not to get called on by the teacher well into our thirties.

lol. You poor thing. I’d say avoiding eye contact is key in a situation like that. eek. How are you supposed to volunteer and actually be useful with your baby there, I wonder?

Reminds me of class when you wanted anything but to be called by the teacher to help out in front of the class. Oy. Glad you stopped by. Keep up the great posts and welcome to the blogosphere!

I never read this one! I forget when I started following your blog. It’s like when you think you’ve seen every episode of your fav show and then you’re watching a rerun one night and you realize you’ve never seen this one. Bonus!
Lord, I feel the same way with kindergarten though. I feel the heat of the room-mothers’ eyes upon me as I saunter in with my plate of cookies, drop them off, and leave.
