Girl’s Day Out

October 3, 2008 7:00 am

Not sure if I’ve ever mentioned it here before but on Wednesdays, we have a sitter from 12-4. This is basically so I can run around town and get shopping down sans children and also I can relax and DO LAUNDRY without Graham unfolding every piece I fold. I know, laundry relaxing? Yes, it really is. We used to have an awesome sitter who I would trust with my kid’s lives (hi Erin), we even equipped her with a car seat and she would take Graham to his music class at Gymboree when Elliot was first born and I needed a break. Then she went off and got her teaching certificate so she’s now in charge of a classroom of kindergarteners which keep her way too busy for babysitting.

Finding a new sitter was tough. Erin was the only stable sitter I had ever had so I don’t really trust anyone else with my kids. We finally settled on a girl from the neighborhool who just started college. She is very nice and very competent, but again, I find it hard to trust people with my kids so I won’t leave the house if both kids are awake.

Let’s back up to our Biloxi trip from last weekend. Jamie suggested that we get massages at the hotel spa and I get a pedicure. Since I don’t really like people touching me, I declined the massage and told him that I didn’t want to get a pedicure by myself. Would he get one with me? Hell no, he said. C’mon, we’re in a strange place and nobody there will ever see you again? After much convincing, Jamie gave in. When we checked into the hotel, I had Jamie call and book them (see how nice he is?). Apparently, the only time they had available was at 9am on Sunday morning and we were to be there thirty minutes early. Uh, no. I’m not dragging my ass downstairs at 8:30am on my first kid-free weekend in a long time, my ass is sleeping in. We called and canceled the pedicures with the understanding that Jamie promised to get one with me when we got home.

Today when the sitter showed up, Jamie and I were off. We sat and enjoyed a leisurely lunch and then moseyed on over to get our pedicures. While they worked on our feet, we sat there and chatted. Jamie looked uncomfortable but he was a good sport about the whole thing. He told me that I had better not blog about this but after a little persuasion, he decided it would be ok. I think I’ve decided that I like having a new girlfriend to get pedis with and this might not have been a one time thing. Not so sure about Jamie, I think he’s afraid someone might find out. Jamie called me from the office to tell me how slimy and weird his feet felt. I apologized and thanked him for putting up with it but then he admitted that it was actually a good slimy, he kind of liked it.

Wanna hear a secret? My father-in-law gets pedicures and likes them. My own dad has sat for a pedicure once in a while when he takes my mom for her nails. John is thinking about it himself.. (The men are finding out our secrets. They must be stopped!)

Oh my gosh, Jamie is THE MAN!!!! Seriously, a little girl bonding with your man sounds awesome. My man is way too out of touch with his feminine side to do anything of the sort. I’m so jealous.

Men are so wierd. I had to drag mine kicking and screaming to get a manicure and *ShaBam* he liked it.
I feel the same way about sitters. It gets exponentially easier once your kids are old enough to tell you everything that went on πŸ˜‰

I’m with Heather on this one….no way D would ever go for this, so I’m keeping it my delightful secret – I am not a girlie girl, but this is my one thing. I have an awesome place, so anytime you girls are up for it πŸ˜‰ Props to Jamie, and all the other men out there willing.

I respect a man that can tell that his feet need work! Good for you for getting him there! πŸ™‚

Wow. That takes some guts, go Jamie. It sounds like fun, although I personally don’t get my feet done, I can see the draw. I’m not big on people touching me either. Never volunteered for a massage, don’t expect to.

We don’t trust people with our kids either. My MIL used to watch my girls when I worked, but her age and health really don’t allow for that any more. Not to mention, now that there’s four kids, not too many family members are jumping at the chance to sit for us. I figure eventually we’ll just let our oldest do it. Needless to say we don’t get out much.

What a nice husband! That would never happen in a million years with Greg! Maybe if I tell him this story…however, I really like hanging out with my GIRL friends to get away from him for a few hours. I’ll have to keep this one on the back burner for emergencies. Thanks for sharing.

On the issue of manny-pedis I am pro-choice. I think every man has the right to choose. He chose well. Men need those things cleaned up.
